Jen Brister recording for BBC Radio4 at The Forge Comedy Club, Brighton

A local favourite and one of the stars of our Forge Comedy Club launch night, we’re so excited to welcome Jen Brister back to Ironworks Studios to record her new solo show for BBC Radio 4.

The past year or so has not been kind to anyone, but for Jen Brister it has been fraught even by lockdown standards. The (non-biological) mother of young, entitled, noisy twin boys – as documented in her successful book The Other Mother – has been trapped in the maelstrom of extreme parenting, her explosive and sharp-tongued wit silenced by the chopping up of vegetables and the whir of the washing machine.

But Jen has found an unusual refuge from all this strain: sea swimming. In the almost always freezing waters of the English Channel, she has found herself not just physically but also mentally freed from the unusual pressures of the present situation. Despite being instinctively resistant to concepts like ‘mindfulness’ and ‘living in the moment’, this acid-tongued comic has – against her own will, and accidentally – embraced them. ‘Swimming has become my constant. Well, that and drinking. But, anyway, let’s get back to the swimming’.

Recording for her Radio 4 solo show debut, Jen vents a year’s worth of stand-up spleen upon an audience in her home town of Brighton – and then shakes off those frustrations by taking us (figuratively) deep-sea swimming. A comic voyage of self-discovery, but also a surprisingly profound examination of the relationship between body and mind.

Monday 23rd May – doors open at 7:30pm

Funny That Comedy at Forge Brighton and Horse Hurst raise over £2,600 for Ukraine charities

We are super pleased to announce that the comedy shows at Forge Comedy Club at Ironworks Studios and Funny That Comedy at Horse Inn Hurstpierpoint on 5th March 2022 raised £2600 for Ukraine, dealing with the incredibly difficult refugee crisis – £1000 of which was a one-off donation.

These figures included the profits for both shows, donations from audience and the founder. Special mention also has to go to Brighton comedian Laura Lexx who forwent her entire fee from the shows at Forge Comedy Club and Haywards Heat Comedy the previous week. Laura we love you!

£1,600 goes towards the International Rescue Committee operating under the DEC umbrella who are on the ground already in Poland helping with the huge number of incoming refugees, and the one-off donation of £1000 towards a local initiative from The Horse Inn to deliver important survival supplies from the UK to the Polish border – details of which are here.

Anyway, you’re all brilliant. So here’s something ridiculously beautiful; a little Ukrainian girl in a bunker singing Let it Go, in Russian. Thank you!

Profits from all comedy shows this weekend to go to Ukraine relief funds

I’m sure a lot of you are seeing the news in Ukraine and like us your heart is going out to the families abandoning their homes and escaping to the border, and feel gutted and helpless.

So we’ve decided the Forge Comedy Club this weekend – as well as the show funnythat.co.uk is putting on at the Horse in Hurstpierpoint this Saturday – will give ALL profits towards the International Rescue Committee who are at the borders *already* helping the 500,000 people already displaced.

Additionally, considering the president of Ukraine’s past, we’re showing solidarity with a fellow comedian having the toughest gig imaginable.

It’s a phenomenal lineup and Emmanuel Sonubi was a massive favourite of ours when doing our Hassocks show last year, and has since gone on to star on Live at the Apollo.
